Spacing a Row of Frames Without Guesswork
A row of frames looks effortless when it is right and obviously wrong when it is not, and the difference is entirely in the arithmetic done before anything is drilled.
Work out the row width first
A row of equal frames occupies the frames plus the gaps between them: four 16″ frames with 3″ gaps is 64 plus three gaps of 3, which is 73″. Note that n frames have n−1 gaps, not n — the commonest off-by-one in this subject.
The spacing calculator returns that total, and on a 120″ wall it also returns the 23.5″ of empty wall to leave on each side to centre the row.
Mark the centres, not the edges
The genuinely useful output is the list of centre positions: for that row, 31.5″, 50.5″, 69.5″ and 88.5″ from the left edge of the wall.
Marking centres rather than edges means a single measurement per frame from one fixed datum, so errors do not accumulate the way they do when each frame is measured from the last one. Measure every mark from the same end of the wall.
Fit is a yes-or-no question
Try seven 16″ frames at 3″ gaps on the same wall and the row comes to 130″ against 120″ available — the calculator reports a side margin of −5″ and simply says it does not fit.
Finding that out with a calculator rather than with a wall full of holes is the entire point. The remedies are fewer frames, smaller frames, or a tighter gap, and the arithmetic tells you which will work.
Centred or evenly spread
There are two ways to lay out a row, and they look quite different. Centring keeps the chosen gap between frames and puts the leftover wall at the two ends. Spreading distributes the wall into n+1 equal gaps, so the end gaps match the internal ones.
For the four-frame row, spreading gives 11.2″ gaps throughout — visually much airier, and appropriate when the row occupies a defined wall panel. Centring suits a row that sits over a piece of furniture, where the relationship is to the sofa rather than to the wall edges.
The gap is the thing that reads
Whichever you choose, keep it constant. The eye compares adjacent spaces far more accurately than it judges absolute distances, so an uneven gap reads as sloppiness even when every frame is perfectly level.
Two to three inches suits most frames. Tighter reads as a single unified block; wider starts to read as separate pieces that happen to be near each other.
Level from a line, not from the last frame
Pencil a light horizontal line at the hook height across the whole run and mark every hook on it. Working frame to frame lets a small error compound down the row, and a row that drifts by a quarter inch per frame is visibly sloping by the fourth.
A laser level makes this trivial. A long spirit level and a straight edge do the same job more slowly.
Paper first
Cut a rectangle to each frame's outer size, mark the hook point on each, and tape them up at the computed centres. Adjusting tape is free; adjusting holes is not, and the arrangement almost always wants one small change once it is on the wall.
