Two thresholds are worth committing to memory: a plain drywall nail stops being enough at around 25 lb, and a stud or a cleat becomes necessary at around 80 lb. Splitting the load across two hooks roughly halves what each point carries, which is often the difference between a fixing plasterboard will take and one it will not.
Ratings are static, clean-load figures quoted for a particular wall. In softer or damaged substrates the fixing holds and the wall fails instead, which is why the guidance escalates to studs rather than simply to bigger anchors. Check for cables and pipes before drilling.

Roughly two-thirds of the furniture width, and the figures are larger than most people guess — a 72″ sofa wants something around 47.5″ wide. The width applies to the visual mass, so a group of frames counts as one piece and it is the group’s total footprint that should land in the range.

The gaps column is the one that causes trouble: n frames have n minus one gaps between them, not n. Miscount it and the row comes out one gap too wide, which is exactly enough to stop it fitting. Every count in this table fits the wall.

Every row is centred on the same 57″ line, and every row has a different hook height — 60″ for the 12″ piece against 72″ for the 36″ one. That is the whole point: correctly hung pictures of different sizes share a centre line, not a hook line.
The hanger drop belongs to the individual frame — it depends on the wire and how it was tied, so measure each one rather than using this column’s assumption.
