Choosing Hanging Hardware for the Weight
A picture falling off a wall is usually a hardware failure rather than a hanging mistake, and it is almost always predictable from one number: the weight.
Weigh it, do not judge it
Glass is the heavy part and it scales with area, so a frame twice the size in each direction weighs roughly four times as much. A large piece with glass can easily reach a weight that no picture hook in a drywall wall will hold.
Put the framed piece on bathroom scales. It takes ten seconds and it is the only input the hardware calculator needs.
The three regimes
Feed weights in and a clear pattern emerges, because hooks come in standard ratings — 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, 75, 100 and 150 pounds:
- Up to about 20 lb — a single picture hook nailed into drywall is enough. A 12 lb piece wants a 20-rated hook.
- Around 25–50 lb — a rated wall anchor, or a hook nailed into a stud. A 25 lb piece needs a 30-rated hook and no longer belongs on a plain drywall nail.
- Above about 50 lb — into a stud, or a heavy-duty toggle, or a French cleat. An 80 lb piece calls for a 100-rated single point, which is beyond what plasterboard alone will take.
Two hooks change the arithmetic
Splitting the load roughly halves what each point carries, and the calculator reports both. That 80 lb piece needs a 100-rated hook on one point or two 50-rated hooks — a much easier specification to meet, and available in fixings that plasterboard will actually accept.
Two hooks also stop the frame swinging out of level every time a door slams, which is the other reason to use them on anything wide.
Add a safety factor
Hook ratings are for a static load applied cleanly. Real walls get knocked, doors slam, and a frame is occasionally leaned on. The calculator takes a safety factor for exactly this: a 25 lb piece at a factor of 1.5 has a design load of 37.5 lb and moves up from a 30-rated hook to a 50.
Using 1.5 as a default costs nothing and covers most of the ways a wall gets treated in a real house.
Know your wall
Everything above assumes plasterboard over timber studs, which is the common case in modern homes and not universal. Solid masonry needs a drilled plug and takes far more load. Lath and plaster is unpredictable — it crumbles, and a fixing that feels solid may be gripping nothing. Hollow blockwork and metal studs each need their own fixings.
If you do not know what your wall is made of, drill a small test hole somewhere it will not show and look at what comes out.
Find the stud properly
An electronic stud finder is the usual method, and the reliable confirmation is a small drill bit — resistance means timber, easy penetration means cavity. Studs are commonly spaced at a regular interval, so finding one predicts the others.
Before drilling anything, check for services. Cables commonly run vertically from sockets and switches and horizontally near them, and pipes run to radiators and taps. A combined detector is inexpensive and the alternative is expensive.
Heavy pieces want a cleat
For anything genuinely large, a French cleat — two interlocking bevelled battens, one on the wall and one on the frame — spreads the load across a wide span and multiple fixings, and self-levels as the piece drops on.
It is more work than a hook and it is the correct answer above a certain size. Mirrors especially: they are heavy, and the failure mode is broken glass.
