Where the Hook Actually Goes
Getting a picture level is easy. Getting it level, at the right height, and in the right place on the wall, on the first attempt, is a matter of marking rather than of skill.
Four numbers, and only one gets marked
The hanging height calculator reports a centre, a top edge, a bottom edge and a hook height, and only the last of those becomes a mark on the wall. Everything else is a consequence of it.
Work it in that order. Fix the centre at the gallery convention, around 57″ from the floor. Half the piece sits above that line and half below, which settles the top and bottom edges. Subtract the hanger drop from the top edge and you have the hook.
For a 24″-tall piece with a 3″ wire drop the calculator gives edges at 69″ and 45″, and 66″ for the hook. Only 66 goes on the wall.
The drop is the one figure that has to be measured
Centre height is a convention and frame height is printed on the box, but the hanger drop belongs to the individual frame — it depends on the length of wire and how tightly it was tied. Two frames off the same shelf can differ by an inch.
To find it, put the frame face down and lift the wire toward the top rail until it is taut, exactly as a hook will hold it. The distance from that lifted point to the top rail is the drop. Fixed hangers — D-rings, sawtooth — are simpler still, since the hanging point cannot move and can be measured straight off.
Taller pieces put the hook higher
Because the centre stays fixed, the hook height moves with the frame. A 36″-tall piece with a 5″ drop puts the hook at 70″ and the top at 75″, against 66″ and 69″ for the 24″ piece.
A row of differently sized pieces therefore has its hooks at a range of heights and its centres all on one line. Setting every hook level with its neighbour is the error this calculation exists to prevent.
Transferring the mark
The tidiest method borrows the frame’s own geometry: run a strip of masking tape across the back, press it against the hanging point so the position is recorded on the tape, then peel it off and stick it to the wall at the computed height. A two-hook frame comes out correctly spaced with no second measurement.
Failing that, measure up from the floor to the hook height and mark. Judging it by eye is where the error creeps in, and the floor is a more dependable datum than the ceiling in most houses.
Two hooks for anything wide
A single hook lets a wide frame pivot, and it will go out of level every time the door slams. Two hooks, spaced apart, hold the angle.
They also halve the load on each fixing, which the hardware calculator accounts for — an 80 lb piece needs a 100-rated single hook or two 50-rated ones, and the pair is much easier to achieve in plasterboard.
When to break the convention
The 57″ centre is calibrated to someone on their feet. Where a room is used seated — a dining room, a study, anywhere with low furniture — the whole scheme wants to come down, since eye level from a chair is nearer 45″. Above furniture, the clearance to the furniture takes priority over the centre line: 6–10″ above a sofa back looks right even when the arithmetic wants otherwise.
In a stairwell, hang to the sightline of someone on the stairs rather than to a fixed height, which means each piece is set individually against the slope.
Check it after a week
Wire stretches slightly and hooks settle. A quick check with a level a week later, and a small nudge, is the difference between a wall that looks right and one that looks nearly right.
