Hanging on Walls That Are Not Plasterboard
Most hanging advice assumes plasterboard over timber studs. A great many walls are not that, and the fixing that works beautifully in one is useless or unsafe in another.
Identify the wall first
Knock on it. A hollow sound with a solid stud every so often is plasterboard on studs. A dull, dead sound throughout is masonry or solid plaster. If you are unsure, drill a small test hole somewhere it will not show and look at the dust: white powder suggests plaster or plasterboard, grey grit suggests masonry, and wood shavings mean you found a stud.
Whatever the wall, check for services before drilling. Cables typically run vertically from sockets and switches and horizontally near them; pipes run to radiators and taps. A detector costs little against the alternative.
Lath and plaster is the awkward one
Common in older houses: thin timber laths with plaster pushed through them. It is unpredictable — a fixing can feel solid while gripping nothing but crumbling plaster, and drilling can crack a whole section loose.
The approach that works is to find the studs behind it and fix into those, treating the plaster itself as carrying nothing. Drill slowly, without hammer action, and expect the surface to be fragile. For anything heavy this is not optional.
Masonry takes more, with the right plug
Solid brick or block will hold far more than plasterboard, but it needs a drilled hole and a plug matched to the screw, and usually a masonry bit with hammer action. Hollow blocks are a trap — they look like solid masonry and behave like a cavity wall, so they need a fixing designed to spread behind the face.
Match the drill bit to the plug, not to the screw, and let the drill do the work.
Metal studs need their own fixings
Increasingly common in newer construction and in commercial buildings. A nail-in picture hook will not hold in a metal stud, and ordinary plasterboard anchors behave differently when there is steel behind them.
Toggle-style fixings designed for metal studs are the answer, and their ratings are worth reading rather than assuming.
Ratings assume the right wall
Worth stating plainly: the figures the hardware calculator returns are hook and anchor ratings, and every rating is quoted for a particular substrate. A 50-rated anchor is 50-rated in the wall it was tested in.
In a wall that is weaker than assumed — soft plaster, a hollow block, a damaged area — the fixing is the strong part and the wall fails instead. That is why the calculator escalates to studs and cleats above about 50 lb rather than simply naming a bigger anchor.
Renting, and walls you cannot drill
Adhesive strips are genuinely useful within their limits, and the limits are real: they are rated conservatively, they need a clean sound surface, and they fail on textured or freshly painted walls. Follow the weight rating strictly and remember it is per pair.
Other options that leave nothing behind: leaning larger pieces on a shelf or mantel, picture rails where the building has them, and freestanding easels for big work. A leaning arrangement suits large art particularly well and is entirely reversible.
When in doubt, spread the load
Two fixings instead of one, a cleat instead of two hooks, a stud instead of a cavity. Every step in that sequence roughly halves what any single point has to carry, and the cost is a few more minutes rather than more money.
For mirrors especially. They are heavy, and the failure mode involves broken glass.
